2d Self-assembly

2D self-assembly is the spontaneous organization of atoms, molecules, or nanoparticles into ordered two-dimensional structures, often on a surface or at an interface. It occurs when noncovalent forces, including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, van der Waals interactions, and π–π stacking, guide building blocks into stable monolayers, networks, or molecular sheets while environmental conditions influence the final pattern. In chemistry, researchers use 2D self-assembly to create tunable surfaces, porous materials, sensors, catalysts, and molecular electronic components. Controlling intermolecular interactions and assembly conditions enables precise regulation of structure, function, and responsiveness at the nanoscale.

The analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) sample cell holds sample and reference buffer and during experiments and is exposed to high vacuum and rotor speeds up to 60,000 rpm. This video will demonstrate the rigorous attention to detail necessary for assembly, loading and alignment of this very important component of an AUC experiment.

A plane traveling due north at 180 km/h in still air was found to be 80 km off-course after 30 minutes, deviating approximately 5 degrees east of north. This deviation means the influence of a crosswind alters the plane’s intended trajectory. The actual ground path formed a diagonal, suggesting that the aircraft’s effective ground speed was reduced to 160 km/h and directed slightly to the east due to the wind.By analyzing the displacement from the intended path, the velocity contributed by the...

Protein Complex Assembly

2020

Proteins can form homomeric complexes with another unit of the same protein or heteromeric complexes with different types. Most protein complexes self-assemble spontaneously via ordered pathways, while some proteins need assembly factors that guide their proper assembly. Despite the crowded intracellular environment, proteins usually interact with their correct partners and form functional complexes. Many viruses self-assemble into a fully functional unit using the infected host cell to...
