Acid Detergent

Acid detergent is a cleaning formulation that combines an acidic agent with surfactants to remove mineral deposits and other residues from surfaces. Its low pH dissolves alkaline scale, metal oxides, and inorganic films, while surfactants reduce surface tension, improve wetting, and help suspend loosened soil for rinsing. In chemistry laboratories and industrial settings, acid detergents can support the cleaning of glassware, instruments, and process equipment when neutral or alkaline cleaners are insufficient. Proper concentration, contact time, material compatibility, and handling are essential because acidic formulations may corrode sensitive surfaces or cause chemical injury.

Source: Armbruster, K. M., Meredith, T. C. Enrichment of Bacterial Lipoproteins and Preparation of N-terminal Lipopeptides for Structural Determination by Mass Spectrometry. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the enrichment of bacterial lipoproteins using a non-ionic detergent that undergoes phase separation upon warming. Through sequential temperature shifts and centrifugation steps, lipoproteins are selectively partitioned into the detergent phase, while non-lipoprotein contaminants...

Isolation of Detergent-Insoluble Protein Aggregates From Human Postmortem Brain Tissue

2025

This video explains the process of isolating and enriching detergent-insoluble protein aggregates from frozen postmortem human brain tissue. It demonstrates key steps, including homogenization, detergent treatment, sonication, and ultracentrifugation to separate and purify the insoluble aggregates. The final step involves solubilizing the aggregates in urea buffer for further analysis.

Detergent Purification of Membrane Proteins

2023

Detergents are used to purify the integral proteins of the membrane. The hydrophobic portion of the detergent can replace membrane phospholipids while solubilizing the membrane proteins. When detergent monomers reach a specific concentration in a solution called critical micelle concentration (CMC), they form micelles. Above CMC, the concentration of the detergent monomers remains in equilibrium with the micelle. The number of detergent monomers present in the CMC varies for each detergent, and...

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.
