Communal Hood

A communal hood is a shared chemical fume hood that protects multiple users by containing and removing hazardous vapors, gases, aerosols, and particulate contaminants during laboratory work. Its exhaust system draws room air into the hood, creating inward airflow that limits the release of airborne chemicals while contaminated air is discharged through a ventilation system; users work behind the sash and keep it positioned appropriately. In chemistry laboratories, communal hoods support procedures involving volatile, corrosive, or toxic substances when individual enclosures are unavailable or impractical. Proper coordination, compatible chemical use, clear workspace organization, and responsible airflow management help maintain safety and effective laboratory operations.

An Introduction to Working in the Hood

2023

Hoods are a common class of instrument, which act as a protective enclosure for various types of laboratory experiments. They serve to shield experimental samples from the environment, as well as to protect the researcher from hazardous or infectious samples. “The Hood” is a term that can include laminar flow benches, fume hoods, as well as tissue culture hoods or biosafety cabinets. All hoods operate based on the principle of laminar flow and have the same basic components, including a...

Fume Hoods and Laminar Flow Cabinets

Robert M. Rioux & William A. Elliott, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Fume hoods and laminar flow cabinets are engineering controls that operate under similar principles. Both use a constant flow of air to prevent contamination of the laboratory environment and its inhabitants. Fume hoods prevent hazardous substances from exiting the hood workspace, whereas laminar flow cabinets prevent contaminants from entering the cabinet workspace. Fume hoods are ventilation systems...

A detached-leaf bioassay protocol was established for mass-rearing chilli thrips using a modified detached-leaf method in agar-containing glass containers, ensuring high survival and synchronized development. This system enables efficient screening of entomopathogenic fungi virulence against 2nd instar larvae and provides a reliable thrips supply for laboratory, greenhouse, and field evaluations.
