Equilibrium Shift

Equilibrium shift is the change in the relative amounts of reactants and products in a reversible chemical reaction when conditions change. According to Le Châtelier’s principle, a system at dynamic equilibrium responds to an imposed change in concentration, pressure, or temperature by favoring the direction that partially counteracts that change, while the equilibrium constant remains temperature-dependent. Analyzing these shifts helps chemists predict product formation, select reaction conditions, and interpret reversible processes. The concept supports industrial synthesis, acid-base chemistry, solubility studies, and laboratory investigations of how energy and composition influence chemical systems.

Effect on Equilibrium: Shift in Labor Supply

2025

A shift in labor supply involves changes in the total number of workers willing to supply labor at different wages. Such shifts are driven by non-price factors like immigration, demographic shifts, or changes in attitudes towards work. When the labor supply curve shifts to the right, this indicates an increase in available workers at each wage. A leftward shift indicates a decrease at each wage. Such shifts alter the entire supply curve, reflecting a change in the relationship between the wage...

Effect on Equilibrium: Shift in Labor Demand

2025

A shift in the market demand for labor indicates a change in the total number of workers that employers are willing to hire at any wage. This demand is influenced by non-wage factors such as changes in product prices and technological advancements in production processes. When the demand for labor shifts, it causes the entire demand curve to move. For example, technological advancements may lead to the availability of improved software tools that help workers produce more output in the same...

Effect of Shift in Demand Curve on Market Equilibrium

Consider an example of a market for electric cars. Rising Demand for Electric Cars: As environmental awareness grows, more consumers opt for electric vehicles (EVs) over traditional gasoline-powered cars. This change in consumer preferences signifies a rightward shift in the demand curve for electric cars, leaving the supply unchanged. • Shortage and Price Increase: To address the resulting shortage, the price of electric cars rises. This higher price incentivizes manufacturers to increase...

Effect of Shift in Supply Curve on Market Equilibrium

2024

The dynamics of market equilibrium, defined by the balance between supply and demand, play a pivotal role in determining the prices and quantities of goods. A fascinating example of this principle can be observed in the technology sector, particularly in smartphone manufacturing. Supply Increase: Imagine a scenario where a major technological breakthrough lowers production costs for smartphones. This innovation acts similarly to a government subsidy by increasing the supply of smartphones,...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Equilibrium is a special case in mechanics that is very important in everyday life. It occurs when the net force and the net torque on an object or system are both zero. This means that both the linear and angular accelerations are zero. Thus, the object is at rest, or its center of mass is moving at a constant velocity. However, this...
