Palladium Carbon Catalyst

A palladium carbon catalyst, commonly written Pd/C, is a heterogeneous catalyst in which palladium is dispersed on activated carbon to accelerate reduction and bond-forming reactions in organic chemistry. Its high-surface-area support exposes palladium sites where substrates and hydrogen adsorb; surface hydrogenation then converts unsaturated bonds, while related surface processes can promote hydrogenolysis. Chemists use Pd/C to hydrogenate alkenes, alkynes, nitro compounds, and other functional groups, and to remove benzyl protecting groups through hydrogenolysis. Because the catalyst can often be separated by filtration, it supports efficient synthesis of pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and research compounds, with performance shaped by loading, solvent, pressure, temperature, and substrate structure.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...

Dichloro{bis[1,1',1''-(phosphinetriyl)tripiperidine]}palladium [(P(NC5H10)3)2Pd(Cl)2] (1) is an easy accessible, cheap, and air stable, but highly active Heck catalyst with an excellent functional group tolerance that efficiently operates under mild reaction conditions to give the coupling products in very high yields.

Palladium N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes: Synthesis from Benzimidazolium Salts and Catalytic Activity in Carbon-carbon Bond-forming Reactions

2017

Detailed and generalized protocols are presented for the synthesis and subsequent purification of four palladium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes from benzimidazolium salts. The complexes were tested for catalytic activity in arylation and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. For each reaction investigated, at least one of the four complexes successfully catalyzed the reaction.

Electrochemical Measurements of Supported Catalysts Using a Potentiostat/Galvanostat

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Yuriy Román — Massachusetts Institute of Technology A potentiostat/galvanostat (often referred to as simply a potentiostat) is an instrument that measures current at an applied potential (potentiostatic operation) or measures potential at an applied current (galvanostatic operation) (Figure 1). It is the most commonly used instrument in the electrochemical characterization of anode and cathode materials for fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries, and supercapacitors.

HKUST-1 as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Vanillin

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.
