Peg Calibration Method

The PEG calibration method uses polyethylene glycol (PEG) standards with known molecular masses to calibrate analytical instruments, establishing an accurate relationship between measured signals and chemical mass. In mass spectrometry, a PEG series produces regularly spaced polymer-ion peaks across the mass-to-charge range; comparing observed peaks with their expected values allows software to correct the mass scale and assess measurement accuracy. This approach supports reliable molecular-mass determination, instrument performance verification, and comparison of spectra between experiments. PEG calibration is particularly useful for polymer analysis and other chemistry applications requiring precise mass measurements over a broad analytical range.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Accurate calibration of glassware, such as volumetric flasks, pipettes, and burettes, is essential to ensure accurate measurements in the analytical laboratory. Calibration helps maintain consistency across measurements and prevents errors arising from inaccurate volumes. Volumetric flasks: Volumetric flasks are designed to prepare aqueous solutions of precise volumes accurately with a calibration line on the neck. To calibrate a volumetric flask, it is important to fill it with distilled...
