Radical Initiation

Radical initiation is the chemical process that generates reactive species with unpaired electrons, creating the first radicals needed to start a chain reaction. It commonly occurs when heat, light, or a chemical initiator causes homolytic bond cleavage, in which each bonded atom receives one electron; peroxide initiators, for example, can form radicals that attack stable molecules or monomers. These newly formed radicals begin propagation steps, while termination eventually removes radical activity. In chemistry, radical initiation is central to free-radical polymerization, combustion, organic synthesis, and photochemical reactions, where controlling initiation conditions helps regulate reaction rate, product formation, and material properties.

Photochemical Initiation Of Radical Polymerization Reactions

2023

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

Initiation of Translation

2020

Initiating translation is complex because it involves multiple molecules. Initiator tRNA, ribosomal subunits, and eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs) are all required to assemble on the initiation codon of mRNA. This process consists of several steps that are mediated by different eIFs. First, the initiator tRNA must be selected from the pool of elongator tRNAs by eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). The initiator tRNA (Met-tRNAi) has conserved sequence elements including modified bases at...

2025

Laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for remnant gastric cancer has been increasingly adopted as a minimally invasive surgical approach in recent years. This article proposes a detailed operating procedure, aiming to provide practical technical guidance for surgeons and promote the broader adoption of laparoscopic surgery in managing remnant gastric cancer.

Radical Reactivity: Electrophilic Radicals

2023

Radicals adjacent to electron‐withdrawing groups are called electrophilic radicals. These radicals readily react with nucleophilic alkenes. For example, the malonate radical, in which the radical center is flanked by two electron‐withdrawing groups, reacts readily with butyl vinyl ether, which consists of an electron‐donating oxygen substituent. The reaction between electrophilic malonate radical and nucleophilic vinyl ether is favored because the radical has a low‐energy SOMO, which interacts...
