Resonance Forms

Resonance forms are alternative Lewis structures that represent the distribution of valence electrons in a molecule or polyatomic ion, helping explain bonding that a single structure cannot capture. They retain the same arrangement of atoms but differ in the placement of π bonds, lone pairs, or formal charges; the actual species is a resonance hybrid with delocalized electrons, not a molecule switching between forms. Resonance forms help predict molecular stability, bond lengths, charge distribution, and reactivity in compounds such as carbonate, nitrate, benzene, and amide groups. Drawing and comparing these contributors is therefore an essential skill in structural analysis and organic reaction mechanisms.

The Lewis structure of a nitrite anion (NO2−) may actually be drawn in two different ways, distinguished by the locations of the N-O and N=O bonds. If nitrite ions do indeed contain a single and a double bond, the two bond lengths are expected to be different. A double bond between two atoms is shorter (and stronger) than a single bond between the same two atoms. However, experiments show that both N–O bonds in NO2− have the same strength and length, and are identical in all other...

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is the underlying optical phenomenon behind label-free biosensors to evaluate the molecular affinity, kinetics, specificity, and concentration of biomolecules. In SPR, biomolecular interactions occur on a biosensor made of a thin layer of metal on a prism. Real-time interactions of biomolecules can be monitored by measuring the changes of light reflected off the underside of the metal. This video describes the basic concepts of SPR and how it is used to analyze...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Henrik Sundén – Chalmers University of Technology Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a vital analysis technique for organic chemists. With the help of NMR, the work in the organic lab has been facilitated tremendously. Not only can it provide information about the structure of a molecule but also determine the content and purity of a sample. Compared with other commonly encountered techniques for organic chemists — such as thermal analysis and mass...
