Atrial Arrhythmias

Atrial arrhythmias are abnormal heart rhythms that originate in the atria, the upper chambers of the heart, and include conditions such as atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. They arise when disrupted impulse formation or conduction, including rapid ectopic activity or reentry circuits, overrides the sinoatrial node; signals reaching the atrioventricular node may then produce an excessively fast, irregular, or poorly coordinated ventricular rhythm. In clinical practice, electrocardiography helps identify these patterns and distinguish their effects on heart rate and rhythm. Accurate diagnosis guides rate or rhythm control and assessment of complications, including reduced cardiac output and thromboembolic stroke risk.

ECG Interpretation of Arrhythmias II: Atrial, Junctional and Ventricular Arrhythmias

2025

Arrhythmia is a condition characterized by an irregular heart rhythm, with ECG changes that differ based on its origin and nature. The types of arrhythmias discussed below include atrial, junctional, and ventricular arrhythmias.Atrial ArrhythmiasPremature Atrial Complexes (PACs): PACs are early atrial beats caused by stress, caffeine, alcohol, electrolyte imbalances, hypoxia, hyperthyroidism, or certain medications (e.g., bronchodilators and decongestants). The ECG shows early P waves with an...

Source: Jungen, C., et al. Impact of Intracardiac Neurons on Cardiac Electrophysiology and Arrhythmogenesis in an Ex Vivo Langendorff System. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).The video demonstrates an ex vivo technique for stimulating the intracardiac nervous system to assess the heart’s susceptibility to arrhythmia. Using a perfusion apparatus, an isolated mouse heart is perfused with an oxygenated buffer. The intracardiac nervous system is then stimulated at a high frequency to induce arrhythmias.
