Preclinical Studies

Preclinical studies are research investigations conducted before human clinical trials to assess whether a drug, medical device, or other intervention is sufficiently safe and promising for clinical evaluation. Researchers use laboratory experiments and animal models to examine biological activity, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, dose responses, and potential mechanisms of action under controlled conditions. These studies help identify candidate treatments, refine experimental designs, and establish evidence needed for regulatory review and first-in-human testing. Although preclinical findings cannot fully predict clinical outcomes, they reduce avoidable risk and connect basic biomedical discoveries with the development of safer, more effective therapies.

Preclinical Development: Overview

2023

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...
