Professional Nursing Ethics

Professional nursing ethics is the systematic application of moral principles, professional standards, and patient rights to decisions about nursing care. In clinical practice, nurses use ethical reasoning to weigh autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, confidentiality, and professional responsibilities when patient preferences, safety, and available resources may conflict. Ethical practice supports informed consent, respectful communication, patient advocacy, equitable treatment, and protection of vulnerable individuals. It also guides responses to dilemmas involving end-of-life care, privacy, refusal of treatment, and scope of practice, strengthening trust and accountability across healthcare teams while promoting safe, compassionate, and patient-centered outcomes.
