Blastomere Targeting

Blastomere targeting is the precise identification and manipulation of individual blastomeres, the cells produced during early embryonic cleavage, to investigate how embryos develop. Researchers locate a blastomere according to its position, developmental stage, or lineage and then apply a focused intervention, such as microinjection, labeling, transplantation, or selective ablation, while preserving the surrounding embryo. In developmental biology, this approach links specific early cells to later tissues and organs, helping reveal cell fate decisions, lineage relationships, and the mechanisms that establish embryonic patterning. It also supports fate mapping and experimental tests of how cell interactions influence development.

The fate of an individual embryonic cell can be influenced by inherited molecules and/or by signals from neighboring cells. Utilizing fate maps of the cleavage stage Xenopus embryo, single blastomeres can be identified for culture in isolation to assess the contributions of inherited molecules versus cell-cell interactions.
