Brillouin Optical Time-domain Analyzer

A Brillouin Optical Time-domain Analyzer (BOTDA) is a distributed fiber-optic sensing system that measures temperature and strain continuously along an optical fiber, making it valuable for monitoring engineered structures. It launches pump and probe signals from opposite ends of the fiber, where stimulated Brillouin scattering produces a frequency shift that varies with local strain and temperature; the probe’s travel time identifies the measurement location. BOTDA systems support structural health monitoring of bridges, tunnels, pipelines, railways, and other infrastructure. By detecting localized changes over long distances, they help assess deformation, identify potential damage, and improve maintenance and safety decisions.

Mechanical Mapping of Spheroids Using Brillouin Spectroscopy

2025

This article describes a protocol for mechanical characterisation of living spheroids within a 3D matrix using Brillouin micro-spectroscopy. This all-optical method enables spheroid visualisation with microscale resolution and quantitative mechanical properties. This approach has implications for mechanical phenotyping; for instance, determining pathological states of tumor spheroids within a 3D microenvironment.

We describe the construction of a rapid continuous-wave-stimulated-Brillouin-scattering (CW-SBS) spectrometer. The spectrometer employs single-frequency diode-lasers and an atomic vapor notch-filter to acquire transmission spectra of turbid/non-turbid samples with high spectral-resolution at speeds up to 100-fold faster than those of existing CW-SBS spectrometers. This improvement enables high-speed Brillouin material analysis.

Photoacoustic ophthalmology (PAOM), an optical-absorption-based imaging modality, provides the complementary evaluation of the retina to the currently available ophthalmic imaging technologies. We report the using of PAOM integrated with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for simultaneous multimodal retinal imaging in rats.

Linear Approximation in Time Domain

2024

Nonlinear systems often require sophisticated approaches for accurate modeling and analysis, with state-space representation being particularly effective. This method is especially useful for systems where variables and parameters vary with time or operating conditions, such as in a simple pendulum or a translational mechanical system with nonlinear springs. For a simple pendulum with a mass evenly distributed along its length and the center of mass located at half the pendulum's length, the...
