Acoustic Tag Implantation

Acoustic tag implantation is a wildlife-tracking technique that places a small sound-emitting device inside an aquatic animal to monitor its movements and behavior. During implantation, researchers use a sterile surgical procedure to position the tag in the body cavity, where it transmits coded acoustic signals at set intervals; underwater receivers detect and record these signals as the animal passes nearby. The resulting data can reveal habitat use, migration routes, survival, and responses to environmental conditions or human activity. In environmental research, acoustic tagging supports fishery management, habitat protection, and evaluation of conservation measures while minimizing the need for continuous visual observation.

The application of a classical fear conditioning behavioral paradigm for auditory prosthetic research in rats is described. This paradigm provides a mechanism for identifying both detection of, and discrimination between, distinct acoustic and electrical stimuli using heart-rate as an outcome measure.

Activating Molecules, Ions, and Solid Particles with Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation in liquids submitted to power ultrasound creates transient extreme conditions inside the collapsing bubbles, which are the origin of unusual chemical reactivity and light emission, known as sonoluminescence. In the presence of noble gases, nonequilibrium plasma is formed. The "hot" particles and the photons generated by collapsing bubbles are able to excite species in solution.
