Medicinal Plant Identification

Medicinal plant identification is the systematic process of determining a plant’s taxonomic identity to ensure that species used in research, healthcare, or products are correctly recognized. It can combine visible traits such as leaf, flower, and seed morphology with genetic methods, including DNA barcoding, in which selected DNA regions are amplified, sequenced, and compared with reference databases. In genetics, these approaches reveal species-specific variation and help distinguish closely related plants or detect substitutions that morphology alone may miss. Reliable identification supports the authentication of medicinal materials, reproducible studies of bioactive compounds, quality control, and conservation of valuable plant resources.

Improving our understanding of and our ability to manage many of the insect-transmitted plant viruses requires the use of the vector. Insect transmission of plant viruses is a tritrophic interaction, and as such requires the manipulation of insects, virus, and plant. Vectors must be reared in large numbers and manipulated in such a way as to insure high rates of transmission to test plants. The basics of rearing and manipulating the whitefly, Bemisa tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a vector of...

Identification of Plasmodesmal Localization Sequences in Proteins In Planta

Plant intercellular connections, the plasmodesmata (Pd), play central roles in plant physiology and plant-virus interactions. Critical to Pd transport are sorting signals that direct proteins to Pd. However, our knowledge about these sequences is still in its infancy. We describe a strategy to identify Pd localization signals in Pd-targeted proteins.
