Mortality Tracking

Mortality tracking is the systematic measurement of deaths within a defined population, time period, or disease group, providing essential evidence about health risks and outcomes. In immunology and infection research, it combines standardized case definitions, death records, laboratory or clinical data, and population denominators to estimate measures such as mortality rates and case-fatality ratios while attributing deaths to specific infections or complications. These data help researchers evaluate pathogen severity, immune protection, treatment effectiveness, and disparities in outcomes, while supporting outbreak surveillance, public health planning, and the development of interventions that reduce infection-related deaths.

Assessing Pathogenic Bacteria–Induced Mortality in C. elegans Larvae

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.

Here we present a protocol for assessing seed survivorship, germination and dormancy under field conditions using buried, labeled seed strips and tetrazolium chloride (TZ) viability testing.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In a staggeringly complex and engaging world, it is crucial to selectively process some stimuli at the expense of others. Experimental psychologists call this ability attention. Specifically, visual attention refers to the ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Many paradigms used to study visual attention involve brief, punctuated, and repeated trials. However, everyday situations often place sustained demands...

Eye Tracking in Cognitive Experiments

2023

Eye tracking as the name suggests involves tracking of eye-movements. It is a non-invasive, sensitive tool that quantifies and measures eye-movements to describe an individuals' cognitive state. An eye-movement between two fixation points is called a saccade, which is one of the fastest motor movements in our body. By observing the profiles of these eye movements, scientists can better understand neural deficits in patients with cognitive impairments. In this video, we will first look at an...
