Peanut Agglutinin

Peanut agglutinin is a plant lectin, or carbohydrate-binding protein, that recognizes specific sugar patterns on cell-surface glycoproteins and glycolipids. It binds preferentially to exposed β-galactose-(1→3)-N-acetylgalactosamine residues, allowing multivalent interactions that cross-link cells or immobilized molecules and produce agglutination. In immunology, labeled peanut agglutinin helps identify cells with development- or activation-associated changes in surface glycans, including distinct thymocyte populations. Its binding properties also support glycan profiling, cell separation, and analysis of how infection or inflammation alters host-cell surfaces, providing a practical link between carbohydrate structure and cellular phenotype.

We demonstrate a method for the analysis of aflatoxins and transgene expression in peanut seeds that contain RNA-interference signals for silencing aflatoxin-synthesis genes in the fungus Aspergillus flavus. RNAi-mediated control of mycotoxins in plants has not been reported previously.

We demonstrate a medium-throughput method for quantification of aflatoxins and stilbenoid phytoalexins in single peanut seeds using ultra performance liquid chromatography. This method was specifically developed for the analyses of wild Arachis species challenged by the aflatoxigenic Aspergillus species.

We describe the enzyme-linked lectin assay (ELLA) for measuring influenza neuraminidase (NA)-inhibition antibody titers in sera. The assay uses peanut agglutinin to quantify galactose residues that become accessible when NA removes sialic acid from fetuin-coated, 96-well plates.
