Animal Surgical Model

An animal surgical model is a controlled research system in which a surgical intervention creates or reproduces a condition for studying disease, treatment, or recovery in a living organism. Researchers select an appropriate species, apply a standardized procedure under anesthesia and analgesia, and monitor physiological, behavioral, and tissue-level responses over time. These models help investigate disease mechanisms, evaluate surgical techniques, test medical devices or therapies, and assess safety before clinical studies. Careful experimental design, postoperative care, humane endpoints, and ethical oversight are essential for producing reliable results while protecting animal welfare. Their findings can guide translational medicine, although differences between animal and human biology require cautious interpretation.

Surgical Technique for the Implantation of a Biomimetic Artificial Intervertebral Disc in a Goat Animal Model

2025

This study presents a novel surgical technique for implanting a biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc (BioAID). The method ensures precise placement and stability, aiming to restore cervical spine function using a goat model. This technique shows promise for clinical application in both human and canine patients suffering from cervical spine myelopathy.

Currently any kind of vascularized composite allotransplantation depends on long-term-immunosuppression, difficult to support for non-life-critical indications. We present a new porcine tibial VCA model that can be used to study bone VCA and demonstrate the use of surgical angiogenesis to maintain bone viability without the need of long-term immune-modulation.
