Balloon Catheter

A balloon catheter is a flexible medical device with an inflatable balloon near its tip, used to widen, support, or temporarily occlude an internal passage. Clinicians guide the deflated catheter through a vessel or body cavity, then inject fluid through a dedicated lumen to expand the balloon under controlled pressure before deflating and removing or repositioning it. In interventional medicine, balloon catheters are central to angioplasty, where inflation compresses plaque and enlarges narrowed arteries, and they also support procedures such as valvuloplasty and selected methods of hemostasis or device deployment. Their design enables minimally invasive treatment while reducing the need for open surgery.

This article presents a unique closed-chest technique for inducing myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in mice. The presented method allows mice to breathe spontaneously while remotely inducing myocardial ischemia. This provides access to the animal for studying the dynamic processes of ischemia and reperfusion in situ and in real-time via noninvasive imaging.

Animal models of atherosclerosis are essential to understand the mechanism and to investigate newer approaches to prevent plaque development or rupture, a leading cause of death in the industrialized world. This protocol uses a combination of balloon injury and cholesterol rich diet to induce atherosclerotic plaques in rabbit iliac artery.
