Capillary Filtration Coefficient

Capillary filtration coefficient (Kf) measures how readily fluid crosses the walls of a particular capillary bed, combining the wall’s hydraulic conductivity with its filtration surface area. In the Starling equation, Kf interacts with hydrostatic and oncotic pressure gradients to determine the net movement of water from plasma into the interstitial space. In medicine, this principle helps explain normal microvascular fluid exchange and the formation of edema when permeability, capillary surface area, or pressure forces change. Measuring or modeling Kf supports interpretation of vascular injury, inflammation, heart failure, and other disorders that disturb fluid balance.

Filtration and Urine Formation

The function of the kidneys is to filter, reabsorb, secrete, and excrete. Every day the kidneys filter nearly 180 liters of blood, initially removing water and solutes but ultimately returning nearly all filtrates into circulation with the help of osmoregulatory hormones. This process removes wastes and toxins but is also crucial to maintain water and electrolyte levels. Most of these functions are performed by the tiny but numerous nephrons contained within the kidneys. Blood enters the renal...

Glomerular Filtration: Net Filtration Pressure

2025

Glomerular filtration, a key process in the kidneys, is regulated by three main pressures: Glomerular blood hydrostatic pressure (GBHP), Capsular hydrostatic pressure (CHP), and Blood colloid osmotic pressure (BCOP). GBHP, with an average value of 55 mmHg, promotes filtration by pushing water and solutes through the filtration membrane. This is balanced by two opposing forces: CHP, a "back pressure" exerted against the filtration membrane by fluid already in the capsular space and renal tubule,...

This video presents the isolation of cerebral capillaries from a fresh human brain tissue. The isolated capillaries can then be used to generate an ex vivo blood brain barrier model.

Coefficient of Variation

The coefficient of variation measures the dispersion of the data points or distribution around the mean. Using the coefficient of variation, we can compare two data series with drastically different means or different units of measurement. The coefficient of variation for a sample and a population is expressed as a percentage of the ratio of standard deviation to the mean. The coefficient of variation is a practical statistical tool in finance. It allows investors to assess the volatility or...

Coefficient of Correlation

The correlation coefficient, r, developed by Karl Pearson in the early 1900s, is numerical and provides a measure of strength and direction of the linear association between the independent variable x and the dependent variable y. If you suspect a linear relationship between x and y, then r can measure how strong the linear relationship is. What the VALUE of r tells us: The value of r is always between –1 and +1: –1 ≤ r ≤ 1. The size of the correlation r indicates the strength of the linear...
