Collection Techniques

Collection techniques are standardized methods for obtaining biological specimens or clinical information in medicine, where sample quality directly affects diagnostic accuracy, patient care, and research reliability. They rely on selecting an appropriate specimen, using aseptic handling, placing it in a suitable container, labeling it accurately, and transporting it under conditions that preserve its characteristics. These practices support the collection of blood, urine, tissue, and other patient samples for laboratory testing, disease monitoring, treatment decisions, and investigation of biological processes. Consistent technique also reduces contamination, processing errors, and avoidable risks to patients and healthcare personnel.

Knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying gustatory transduction has recently enjoyed significant advances, largely due to using animal models. However, the wide diversity in taste sensitivity and specificity among mammals warrants studies in human tissue. We describe a biopsy technique to collect living taste cells from the papillae on human tongue.

Here, we describe a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique for serial sampling of liver and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) in macaques that allows for increased sampling frequency, and reduces the potential for surgical complications when compared to performing a laparotomy.

Protein Lysate Extraction: A Technique to Lyse Organoids to Collect Cellular Proteins
