Endoscopic Suture Technique

Endoscopic suture technique is a minimally invasive method for placing sutures through an endoscope to approximate, close, or reinforce tissue within the gastrointestinal tract and other accessible internal sites. It works by guiding a needle and suture through the endoscope, passing the needle across a tissue defect or between tissue layers, and securing the thread with knots or a specialized closure device. Clinicians can use the technique to close perforations, mucosal defects, and procedure-related openings, control selected sources of bleeding, or reinforce repairs when conventional surgery is undesirable or insufficient. Its precision supports tissue closure while reducing access trauma, making it important in therapeutic endoscopy and advanced minimally invasive care.

2025

In this video, we demonstrate suturing techniques — core suture and Q suture — to repair the foot flexor tendon in an ex vivo porcine model. Q sutures enhance the strength of the core suture in tendon repair and decrease gapping at the tendon repair site.

Full-Endoscopic Isolation Zone Technique for the Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation

Source: Wang, L., et.al. Full-Endoscopic Isolation Zone Technique for the Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation. J. Vis. Exp.(2023)This video demonstrates a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to treat lumbar disc herniation by removing the protruded nucleus pulposus and ruptured annulus fibrosus. The technique decompresses the affected nerve root, alleviates pain, and restores nerve function through targeted tissue resection and radiofrequency modulation.

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.
