Hilar Dissection

Hilar dissection is a surgical technique that separates and identifies the blood vessels, ducts, nerves, and connective tissue entering or leaving an organ at its hilum. Surgeons proceed through carefully defined tissue planes, exposing each structure for controlled preservation, ligation, division, or reconstruction while limiting bleeding and adjacent-tissue injury. In thoracic and hepatobiliary surgery, hilar dissection supports procedures such as lung resection, liver surgery, and transplantation, where accurate anatomical identification is essential for safe organ removal or implantation. Mastery of this technique improves operative control, reduces complications, and helps clinicians manage complex anatomy in both open and minimally invasive procedures.

A unique rat liver hilar clamp model was developed for studying the impact of pharmacologic molecules in ameliorating ischemia-reperfusion injury. This model includes direct cannulation of the portal supply to the ischemic liver segment via a branch of the portal vein, allowing for direct hepatic delivery.

The zebrafish kidney is home to both renal and hematopoietic adult stem/progenitor cells, and represents an outstanding opportunity to study these cell types and their progeny in a vertebrate model organism. Here, we demonstrate a detailed dissection procedure that enables the researcher to identify and surgically remove the adult zebrafish kidney, which can be used for applications such as cell isolation, transplantation, and expression studies of kidney and/or blood cell populations.
