Continuous Renal Replacement

Continuous renal replacement is a group of extracorporeal blood-purification therapies that gradually replace kidney filtration in critically ill patients, particularly when rapid fluid removal is poorly tolerated. Blood passes through a hemofilter, where solutes move by diffusion or convection and excess water is removed by ultrafiltration; replacement fluid may restore desired volume and electrolyte balance. Clinicians select modalities such as continuous venovenous hemofiltration or hemodiafiltration according to fluid status, metabolic needs, and vascular access. This approach supports management of acute kidney injury, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, and fluid overload while allowing close control in intensive care.

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy

2025

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, also known as CRRT, is a procedural treatment for acute kidney injury (AKI) that gradually removes uremic toxins and fluids while maintaining acid-base balance and stabilizing electrolytes. It is particularly useful for hemodynamically unstable patients. Unlike intermittent hemodialysis, which is faster, CRRT provides a gentler approach over 24 hours, closely mimicking the function of natural kidneys. However, CRRT is not ideal for patients with...

Extracorporeal Removal of Drugs: Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy

2025

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is an essential intervention for patients experiencing severe kidney dysfunction. This therapy offers a continuous mechanism for removing fluids and toxins from the bloodstream, leveraging the patient’s blood pressure to facilitate filtration through a specialized filter. This method contrasts with intermittent dialysis, providing a gentler and more consistent removal of waste products and excess fluid, which is particularly beneficial in critically...

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.
