Laminectomy Technique

Laminectomy is a spinal surgical technique that removes part or all of the lamina, the bony plate forming the back of a vertebra, to relieve pressure within the spinal canal. During the procedure, the surgeon exposes the affected vertebra, removes the lamina and sometimes nearby ligament or bone, and may combine decompression with stabilization when spinal integrity requires support. In medicine, laminectomy is used to treat nerve compression caused by conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated disks, or tumors, with the goal of reducing pain, weakness, and impaired movement. Careful patient selection and imaging help guide the level and extent of treatment.

We present a methodology for using an ultrasonic osteotome combined with a conventional osteotome for laminectomy in thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum. This is a relatively safe and easy-to-learn method that avoids the perioperative complications associated with the conventional method.
