Obese Mice

Obese mice are laboratory mice with excessive adipose tissue and body weight, used to model obesity and its effects on human health. Researchers produce obesity through genetic alterations, high-fat diets, or other controlled feeding conditions that disrupt energy balance and promote fat accumulation, insulin resistance, and chronic low-grade inflammation. These models help investigators examine metabolic disease, cardiovascular complications, immune responses, and interactions between obesity and cancer or infectious disease. By comparing obese mice with lean controls and testing dietary, pharmacological, or genetic interventions, researchers can evaluate disease mechanisms and identify potential treatments, while accounting for important differences between mouse physiology and human medicine.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
