Response Time Measurement

Response time measurement is the quantification of the interval between a defined stimulus and an observable response, providing an objective measure of how quickly a person or physiological system reacts. In medicine, testing typically presents a controlled visual, auditory, or tactile stimulus and records the time until a button press, movement, speech response, or other predefined event, often using specialized software or sensors. Results can help assess cognitive processing, motor function, sensory pathways, and changes associated with neurological conditions, medication effects, fatigue, or recovery. Standardized protocols and repeated trials improve reliability and support clinical assessment and medical research.

Conventional computer hardware can not generate visual stimuli with sufficiently high grayscale resolution and measure response times with sufficient accuracy. We describe how to use the VideoSwitcher to produce high-resolution monochromatic displays, and the RTbox to measure response times with high accuracy on conventional computer hardware.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.

Measurement of Compressive Stress-Strain Response at Small-Strains

2025

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.
