Submaximal Endurance Test

A Submaximal Endurance Test is a clinical or research assessment that estimates exercise capacity by measuring physiological responses to exercise performed below an individual’s maximum effort. During a standardized workload, such as walking or cycling, clinicians monitor variables including heart rate, perceived exertion, exercise duration, and sometimes oxygen uptake, while observing symptoms and recovery. These responses help characterize aerobic fitness and functional capacity without requiring maximal exertion. In medicine, the test supports exercise prescription, rehabilitation planning, monitoring of treatment or fitness changes, and evaluation of individuals who may not be suitable for maximal exercise testing.

This protocol uses motion mode ultrasound and surface electromyography simultaneously to measure muscle function of the core. Muscle thickness and activation of the local stabilizers (e.g., transverse abdominis, internal oblique) and global movers (e.g., external oblique) is achievable during specific time points of the side plank and dead bug exercises.
