Guidance Cue Response

Guidance cue response is the way neurons detect and react to spatial signals that direct movement, growth, or connectivity within the nervous system. In developing neural circuits, receptors on axons or migrating neurons interpret molecular cues as attractive or repulsive, triggering intracellular signaling that reorganizes the cytoskeleton and changes the direction of extension. Studying these responses helps explain axon pathfinding, neuronal migration, and the formation of precise connections between brain regions. This knowledge supports research into nervous system development, neural regeneration, and disorders in which disrupted guidance signaling alters circuit assembly or function.

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

Assessing Interneuron Response to Chemoattractive Cues from Periventricular Endothelial Cells

2025

This video shows a method to test interneuron migration in response to chemoattractive cues from periventricular endothelial cells (PVECs). Interneurons are placed in a central compartment, with PVECs and control cells on either side. Increased migration towards PVECs indicates a positive response to their chemoattractive signals.

We discuss a novel method forviewpoint-rotation of visual stimuli, and demonstrate using a mirror stereoscopethe three-dimensional percept of rotation-in-depth. The technique can be used to investigate the role of stereoscopic cues in encoding viewpoint-rotated figures.

A Protocol for Measuring Cue Reactivity in a Rat Model of Cocaine Use Disorder

Cue reactivity is conceptualized as sensitivity to cues linked with drug-taking experiences that contribute to craving and relapse in abstinent humans. Cue reactivity is modeled in rats by measuring attentional orientation toward drug-associated cues that results in appetitive approach behavior in a cue reactivity test following self-administration and forced abstinence.

Non-Verbal Cues

Non-verbal communication extends beyond gestures and facial expressions to include vocal elements known as paralanguage. Paralanguage consists of non-verbal vocal cues such as pitch, loudness, speech rate, pauses, and non-verbal vocalizations like laughter, sighs, and moans. These elements not only accompany speech but also provide critical emotional and contextual information. The Role of Paralanguage in CommunicationParalanguage adds depth to spoken language by conveying emotions and...
