Light Exposure Effects

Light exposure effects are the physiological and behavioral changes produced when light interacts with living organisms, making them important for vision, sleep, mood, and circadian timing. In the nervous system, retinal photoreceptors and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells detect light and transmit signals to brain regions such as the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which coordinates daily rhythms and influences melatonin production. Research on light exposure effects helps explain how timing, intensity, and wavelength shape alertness, sleep-wake cycles, and emotional states. These findings inform studies of circadian disruption, shift work, seasonal changes, sleep disorders, and light-based interventions.

This protocol describes a method for exposing rodents to electronic cigarette vapor (E-vapor) and cigarette smoke. Exposure chambers are constructed by modifying anesthesia chambers with an automated pumping system that delivers E-vapor or cigarette smoke to rodents. This system can easily be modified to accommodate many experimental endpoints.
