Movie Protagonist

A movie protagonist is the central character whose goals, decisions, and conflicts organize a film’s narrative and guide the viewer’s attention. In neuroscience, responses to protagonists can be studied through processes such as mentalizing, which involves inferring another person’s thoughts and intentions, and empathy, which supports emotional engagement with a character’s experiences. Researchers use narrative films and controlled scenes as ecologically relevant stimuli to examine attention, memory, emotion, social cognition, and brain responses to complex events over time. This approach helps connect laboratory findings with everyday perception and may clarify how stories influence social understanding and behavior.

Creating Dynamic Images of Short-lived Dopamine Fluctuations with lp-ntPET: Dopamine Movies of Cigarette Smoking

2013

We present a novel PET imaging approach for capturing dopamine fluctuations induced by cigarette smoking. Subjects smoke in the PET scanner. Dynamic PET images are modeled voxel-by-voxel in time by lp-ntPET, which includes a time-varying dopamine term. The results are 'movies' of dopamine fluctuations in the striatum during smoking.

Post-Movie Subliminal Measurement (PMSM), for Investigating Implicit Social Bias

This protocol describes the use of movies to investigate brain mechanisms underlying implicit social biases during functional magnetic resonance imaging. When the face of a protagonist is presented after a movie subliminally, it evokes an implicit response based on knowledge of the protagonist gained during the movie.

This protocol provides a Fiji-based, user-friendly methodology along with straightforward instructions explaining how to reliably analyze actomyosin behavior in individual cells and curved epithelial tissues. No programming skills are required to follow the tutorial; all steps are performed in a semi-interactive manner using the graphical user interface of Fiji and associated plugins.

Group Design

2020

The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between the two are due to...
