Neonatal Animals

Neonatal animals are newborn or very young animals studied during the early postnatal period, when rapid nervous-system maturation makes them important models for understanding development and disease. During this stage, neural circuits form and refine through processes such as synaptic growth, sensory-driven activity, and changing patterns of neuronal excitability, while researchers control age, environment, and experimental conditions to assess brain function. In neuroscience, neonatal animal models support research on neurodevelopment, reflexes, sensory processing, injury, and treatments, helping connect cellular mechanisms with later behavior and neurological outcomes.

A technique to isolate cholangiocytes from the extrahepatic bile ducts of neonatal mice is described. The ducts are meticulously dissected, and then cells are isolated by outgrowth in thick collagen gels. This method provides a useful tool for studying extrahepatic bile duct development and pathology.

Primary mouse cardiomyocyte cultures are one of the pivotal tools for the investigation of myofibrillar organization and function. The following protocol describes the isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes from neonatal mouse hearts. The resulting cardiomyocyte cultures may be subsequently used for a variety of biomechanical, biochemical and cell-biological assays.

Large animal models have good translational values in the examination of physiology and pharmacology of neonatal asphyxia. Using newborn piglets, we develop an experimental protocol to simulate neonatal asphyxia which has advantages of studying the systemic and regional hemodynamics, oxygen transport with biochemical and pathologic pathways and correlations.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following perinatal asphyxia can be studied using animal models. We demonstrate the procedures necessary for establishing a piglet model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
