Neuroma Formation

Neuroma formation is the development of a disorganized mass of regenerating nerve fibers and supporting tissue, usually after peripheral nerve injury or surgical transection. When axons are severed, their distal segments degenerate while proximal axons sprout; if the nerve ends cannot reconnect with an appropriate pathway, Schwann cells, fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix can surround the persistent sprouts, producing a neuroma that may generate spontaneous or mechanically evoked pain. In neuroscience, understanding this process supports the study of nerve repair, chronic neuropathic pain, and sensory dysfunction, while informing approaches that improve axonal guidance, limit abnormal regeneration, and evaluate neuroma-related symptoms.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Stromal Vascular Fraction-Enriched Fat Grafting for the Management of Symptomatic Neuromas

Source: Zimmermann, S., et.al. Stromal Vascular Fraction-enriched Fat Grafting for the Treatment of Symptomatic End-neuromata. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the surgical procedure for neurolysis and stromal vascular fraction (SVF)-enriched fat grafting in the management of symptomatic neuroma. Neurolysis removes adhesion tissue to restore nerve gliding, while SVF-enriched fat grafting is applied around the nerve to create a protective barrier, support nerve healing, and enhance...

This protocol describes the tibial neuroma transposition model, which entails a lesion of the tibial nerve with subsequent transposition of the proximal nerve end toward a subcutaneous pretibial or lateral position. Behavioral testing of neuroma pain and plantar hyperalgesia is quantified using Von Frey monofilaments.

Solution Formation

There is no one solvent that can dissolve every type of solute. Some substances that readily dissolve in a certain solvent might be insoluble in a different solvent. A simple way to predict which substances dissolve in which solvent is the phrase "like dissolves like". This means that polar substances, such as salt and sugar, dissolve in a polar substance like water. In contrast, non-polar substances are more soluble in non-polar solvents such as carbon tetrachloride. This selective solubility...
