Probe Implantation

Probe implantation is a neurosurgical method for placing electrodes or other sensing devices into or near nervous tissue to measure neural activity or deliver stimulation over time. Using stereotaxic guidance, researchers position the probe at a defined brain region and secure it so that conductive contacts interface with neurons, while signals are recorded or electrical pulses are delivered through controlled hardware. In neuroscience, implanted probes support studies of neural circuits, behavior, disease mechanisms, and brain-machine interfaces, enabling experiments that connect cellular or population activity with behavior. Careful targeting, fixation, and monitoring help improve data quality and reduce tissue disruption.

Positioning Laser Doppler Probe: A Technique to Implant Probe Over Middle Cerebral Artery for Blood Flow Measurement in Murine Model

2025

This video describes the surgical procedure to immobilize the laser Doppler probe over the murine brain's middle cerebral artery, or MCA. The probe helps to measure the blood flow in the brain's microvasculature by measuring the Doppler shift caused due to the motion of red blood cells within the artery.
