Rat Brain Tissue

Rat brain tissue is neural tissue from the rat brain used as a model for studying nervous system structure, function, and disease in neuroscience. Researchers preserve tissue through fixation, prepare thin sections, and apply stains or molecular labeling methods to visualize neurons, glial cells, brain regions, and cellular changes under a microscope. These preparations support investigations of neuroanatomy, neural circuits, development, injury, and neurological disorders, while enabling comparisons between experimental groups and evaluation of cellular responses to drugs or other interventions. Rat brain tissue therefore provides a practical bridge between controlled laboratory experiments and broader understanding of mammalian brain biology.

A Hydrophobic Tissue Clearing Method for a Rat Brain Tissue Sample

2025

Source: Kirchner, K.N., et al., A Hydrophobic Tissue Clearing Method for Rat Brain Tissue. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the method of hydrophobic tissue clearing of a rat brain tissue sample. The sample is sequentially dehydrated in methanol, treated with a dichloromethane and methanol mixture to dissolve lipids and pigments, and transferred to dibenzyl ether for complete tissue clearing, enabling detailed imaging without thin sectioning.

Obtaining a Single-Cell Suspension from Frozen Rat Brain Tissue

Isolating primary microglia from the cellular heterogeneity of the brain is essential to investigate their role in both physiological and pathological conditions. This protocol describes a mechanical isolation and mixed cell culture technique that provides high yield and high purity, viable primary microglial cells for in vitro study and downstream applications.
