Simultaneous Fmri Electrophysiology

Simultaneous fMRI electrophysiology is a multimodal neuroimaging technique that records brain electrical activity while measuring blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signals during the same experiment. Electrophysiological recordings, such as EEG or intracranial measurements, capture rapid neural voltage changes, whereas fMRI detects hemodynamic responses linked to local changes in blood oxygenation; synchronizing the two signals helps relate neural timing to spatially localized activity. This approach supports investigations of sensory processing, cognition, brain networks, and disease-related dysfunction. By integrating complementary measurements, it can clarify how neuronal dynamics produce macroscopic imaging signals and improve interpretation of functional brain maps.

This protocol describes a standard method for simultaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging and deep brain stimulation in the rodent. The combined use of these experimental tools allows for the exploration of global downstream activity in response to electrical stimulation at virtually any brain target.

Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional Magnetic Resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful neuroimaging tool. However, the inside of an MRI scanner forms a difficult environment for EEG data recording and safety must be considered whenever operating EEG equipment inside a scanner. Here, we present an optimised EEG-fMRI data acquisition protocol.

We present a protocol for concurrent collection of EEG/fMRI data, and synchronized MR clock signal recording. We demonstrate this method using a unique paradigm whereby subjects receive ‘cold glove’ instructions during scanning, and EEG/fMRI data are recorded along with hand temperature measurements both before and after hypnotic induction.

Procedures are described to perform simultaneous recordings of membrane potential or current and changes of intracellular calcium concentration. Suprachiasmatic nucleus neurons are filled with the calcium indicator bis-fura-2 using a patch clamp electrode in the whole cell patch clamp configuration.
