Single Cell Isolation

Single cell isolation is the process of separating individual cells from a tissue or cell mixture so each cell can be analyzed independently. In neuroscience, researchers typically dissociate brain tissue by combining mechanical disruption with enzymes that loosen extracellular connections, then use filtration, centrifugation, or cell-sorting methods to obtain a viable single-cell suspension. Isolated neurons, glial cells, and other neural cell types can be characterized through microscopy, electrophysiology, flow cytometry, or single-cell sequencing. These approaches reveal cellular diversity, gene-expression patterns, developmental states, and disease-associated changes that bulk tissue analysis can obscure.
