Electroencephalography

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a noninvasive method for recording the brain’s electrical activity from electrodes placed on the scalp, making it important for studying neural function in health and disease. The electrodes detect voltage fluctuations generated primarily by synchronized postsynaptic activity in populations of cortical neurons; an amplifier records these signals over time, producing waveforms that can be analyzed by frequency, amplitude, and timing. In neuroscience, EEG supports research on sleep, sensory processing, attention, and cognition, while clinical recordings help identify abnormal patterns associated with epilepsy and other disorders. Its millisecond temporal resolution also complements imaging methods that provide stronger spatial detail.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.
