Targeted Neuronal Population

A targeted neuronal population is a defined group of neurons selected by shared molecular markers, anatomical location, connectivity, or physiological properties for focused study in neuroscience. Researchers identify these cells using genetic, anatomical, or activity-based markers and can then label, record, stimulate, or inhibit them with greater specificity than is possible across an entire brain region. This approach helps link neuronal identity and circuit activity to behavior, sensory processing, learning, and disease-related changes. Studying targeted neuronal populations also clarifies how distinct cell types interact within neural circuits and supports the development of more precise experimental models and potential therapeutic strategies.

This video demonstrates a technique for embryonic stem cell differentiation into a networked population of neurons with functioning synapses. It outlines the steps involved in embryonic stem cell differentiation into neurons, induction of neuronal network formation, and enrichment of the culture with networked neurons.

Simultaneous Eye Tracking and Single-Neuron Recording to Identify Target-Selective Neurons

2025

The video demonstrates an assay to identify target-selective neurons via simultaneous eye-tracking and single-neuron recordings. A human participant is tasked with identifying a target object among an array of objects in a display, and the eye movement is tracked. Simultaneously, single neurons' firing rate is recorded via electrodes implanted in the brain. The data from both recordings are correlated to assess the presence of target-selective neurons.

A Method to Target and Isolate Airway-innervating Sensory Neurons in Mice

Organ specific sensory neurons are difficult to identify. Fast Blue tracing is used to identify nodose neurons innervating the airways for cell sorting. Sorted nodose neurons are used to extract high quality ribonucleic acid (RNA) for sequencing. Using this protocol, gene expression of airway specific neurons is determined.
