Wrist Stimulation

Wrist stimulation is the controlled activation of sensory or motor pathways at the wrist to investigate how peripheral signals influence the nervous system. Depending on the method, electrical, mechanical, or other physical stimuli activate nerves and receptors near the wrist, generating afferent signals that travel to the spinal cord and brain and may also influence muscle activity. In neuroscience, this approach helps researchers examine somatosensory processing, sensorimotor integration, and neural responses to peripheral input. It also supports studies of pain modulation, motor rehabilitation, and neuroprosthetic control by providing a practical, accessible site for delivering repeatable stimulation.

2015

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The wrist is a complex joint made up of 8 carpal bones and their numerous articulations and ligaments. Overlying the wrist are the tendons and muscles of the hand and fingers. The hand is made up of 5 metacarpal bones, and the tendons that run to the hand overlie these bones. Finally, the fingers consist of 14 phalanges with their articulations held together by collateral ligaments and volar plates. Common mechanisms of...

A protocol to evaluate solutions based on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) wrist wearables to estimate stress in students is proposed. The protocol is carried out in two phases, an initial laboratory-based stress induction test, and a monitoring stage taking place in the classroom while the student is performing academic activities.
