Lift-off Technique

The lift-off technique is a microfabrication method for creating patterned thin films by depositing material onto a pre-patterned resist layer and then removing the resist. A substrate is coated with resist, exposed and developed to form openings, followed by deposition of a metal or other film; dissolving the resist lifts away unwanted material while the deposited film in the openings remains. This subtractive patterning approach avoids directly etching the deposited layer and can produce fine features with defined geometry. In physics, lift-off supports the fabrication of electrodes, contacts, sensors, and other structures used in electronic, optical, and nanoscale devices.

Lift

Lift is a fundamental aerodynamic force that acts perpendicular to the direction of airflow. It plays a central role in achieving and sustaining flight and in stabilizing various vehicles. Lift primarily originates from pressure differences created across surfaces, such as an airfoil. A lower pressure region forms above the wing, while a higher pressure region forms below it, generating an upward force. This differential results from the shape and orientation of the airfoil, enabling the wing...

Clark Y-14 Wing Performance: Deployment of High-lift Devices (Flaps and Slats)

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire A wing is the major lift-generating apparatus in an airplane. Wing performance can be further enhanced by deploying high-lift devices, such as flaps (at the trailing edge) and slats (at the leading edge) during takeoff or landing. In this experiment, a wind tunnel is utilized to generate certain airspeeds, and a Clark Y-14 wing with a flap and slat...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN It has been demonstrated that even minimal handling of mice and rats is stressful to the animals. Handling for cage changing and other noninvasive procedures causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and other physiological parameters, such as serum corticosterone levels. Fluctuations can continue for up to several hours. The methods of restraint required for injections and blood...
