Particle Velocity

Particle velocity is the vector rate at which a particle’s position changes, describing both how fast it moves and the direction of its motion. It is calculated as displacement divided by elapsed time for average velocity, or as the time derivative of position for instantaneous velocity, with acceleration describing how velocity changes. In physics, particle velocity helps characterize motion in mechanical systems, fluids, and waves; in wave phenomena, the oscillatory velocity of medium particles can differ substantially from the speed at which the wave propagates. Measuring and modeling particle velocity supports analysis of forces, momentum, vibration, fluid flow, and energy transport.

2013

Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows which are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. Shear rate, maximum velocity, velocity profile shape, and flow rate, each of which has clinical applications, can be derived from these measurements.

Experimental Measurement of Settling Velocity of Spherical Particles in Unconfined and Confined Surfactant-based Shear Thinning Viscoelastic Fluids

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

Kinetic Molecular Theory: Molecular Velocities, Temperature, and Kinetic Energy

2020

The kinetic molecular theory qualitatively explains the behaviors described by the various gas laws. The postulates of this theory may be applied in a more quantitative fashion to derive these individual laws. Collectively, the molecules in a sample of gas have average kinetic energy and average speed; but individually, they move at different speeds. Molecules frequently undergo elastic collisions in which the momentum is conserved. Since the colliding molecules are deflected off at different...
