Waveform Measurement

Waveform measurement is the quantitative characterization of a time-varying physical signal, such as voltage, current, sound pressure, or displacement, to determine its amplitude, timing, frequency, and shape. In physics, sensors and instruments convert a signal into a measurable electrical quantity, while an oscilloscope or data-acquisition system samples it at defined time intervals; the resulting trace can reveal periodicity, transients, phase relationships, and distortion. These measurements support testing of electronic circuits, vibration and acoustic systems, optical detectors, and experimental models, helping researchers compare predictions with observations and identify noise, instability, or changes in system behavior.

Effective Value of a Periodic Waveform

2024

The concept of effective value, the root mean square (RMS) value, is crucial in understanding electrical circuits and power delivery. This idea emerges from the necessity to measure the effectiveness of a voltage or current source in supplying power to a resistive load. The effective value of a periodic current represents the direct current (DC) that conveys the same average power to a resistor as the periodic current itself. This concept is crucial when assessing AC circuits. To determine the...

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.
