Dissenter Presence

Dissenter presence is the inclusion of a person who expresses an opinion that differs from the majority, a condition that can substantially influence social judgment and conformity. In classic conformity research, a dissenter breaks the group’s unanimity, providing social support and signaling that alternative responses are acceptable, which reduces the pressure to align with the majority even when the dissenting answer is not fully correct. Studying dissenter presence helps psychologists explain resistance to conformity, minority influence, and the conditions that promote independent judgment. These findings inform research on group decision-making, disagreement, and the value of differing perspectives in collective settings.

Here, we present a protocol that manipulates interlocutor visibility to examine its impact on gesture production in interpersonal communication. This protocol is flexible to tasks implemented, gestures examined, and communication modality. It is ideal for populations with communication challenges, such as second language learners and individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
