Systematic Desensitization

Systematic desensitization is a behavioral therapy that reduces anxiety by gradually helping individuals face feared objects, situations, or memories in a controlled setting. The process typically combines relaxation training with an individualized fear hierarchy, beginning with less distressing experiences and progressing toward more challenging ones while the person remains calm. Through repeated, manageable exposure, anxiety responses can weaken and new associations between the feared stimulus and safety can develop. In psychology, this approach has been used to treat phobias, performance anxiety, and other anxiety-related problems, while also illustrating how learning principles can shape emotional responses.

GPCR Desensitization

2023

G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling plays a crucial role in cell functioning. GPCR desensitization is an equally essential process. It allows cells to respond to changing environments and regain sensitivity to new stimuli while preventing unnecessary stimulation when no longer needed. Prolonged exposure to stimuli leads to GPCR desensitization. It involves blocking the receptors from binding and activating additional G proteins. This inhibits activation of downstream effectors, thereby...

Desensitization and Tachyphylaxis

2023

Tachyphylaxis is described as a rapid decrease in response to a drug after repeated or continuous administration of the same drug dose. It is a phenomenon where the body becomes less responsive to a particular substance or intervention over time, requiring higher doses or stronger interventions to achieve the same effect. It results from adaptive changes in the body's receptors, signaling pathways, or physiological processes that occur in response to prolonged exposure to a stimulus. Several...

Systematic Reviews

A systematic review is a rigorous, transparent method for identifying, evaluating, and combining all relevant research to address a specific question. For instance, a review might examine whether exercise reduces anxiety. Unlike narrative reviews, systematic reviews follow predefined protocols to reduce bias and ensure comprehensive coverage of the available evidence. Many follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, which include...
