Unresolved Grief

Unresolved grief is a persistent difficulty adapting to a significant loss, in which mourning remains emotionally or functionally disruptive rather than gradually becoming integrated into a person’s life. It can involve sustained yearning, sadness, guilt, anger, avoidance, or difficulty accepting the loss, often maintained by repeated rumination, painful reminders, or withdrawal from supportive relationships. In psychology, recognizing these patterns helps distinguish expected variations in bereavement from grief that warrants additional assessment and support. Grief-focused counseling and psychotherapy can address loss-related thoughts, emotional avoidance, coping strategies, and social connection, helping individuals process the loss and restore daily functioning.
