<p><span style="color: gray;">Dr. Jin Hong received a PhD from Sun Yat-sen University in 2020 and then went to the Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to engage in research as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In October 2022, he joined Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University as an assistant research fellow. He has long been committed to research in the field of medical artificial intelligence and has published over 20 papers in international journals and conferences on the analysis of medical images (including fundus images). He has served as a guest editor for the international journals Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, Applied Sciences, and Technology in Cancer Research &amp; Treatment, as well as a reviewer for over a dozen international journals.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: gray;">Prof. Yu-Dong Zhang is a Professor at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester, UK. His research interests include deep learning and medical image analysis. He is the Fellow of IET, EAI, and BCS. He is the Senior Member of IEEE, IES, and ACM. He is the Distinguished Speaker of ACM and was included in Most Cited Chinese Researchers (Computer Science) by Elsevier from 2014 to 2018. He was the 2019 &amp; 2021 recipient of Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate. He won the Emerald Citation of Excellence 2017 and MDPI Top 10 Most Cited Papers 2015. He is included in Top Scientist in Research.com and is the author of over 300 peer-reviewed articles in top indexed journals in the field and has more than 50 ESI Highly Cited Papers and 5 ESI Hot Papers. He has received over 25,000 Google Scholar citations (h-index 88).&nbsp;</span></p>

<p><span style="color: gray;">Prof. Weihua Yang has an MD degree and currently, he is working as an ophthalmologist at Shenzhen Eye Hospital. He specializes in digital technology and artificial intelligence research in ophthalmology. He has solid professional theoretical knowledge and rich clinical experience in various ophthalmic diseases, especially good at phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation, diagnosis, and treatment of various glaucoma, laser treatment of fundus diseases and other comprehensive treatment, dry eye, and other ocular surface diseases. He has undertaken more than 20 scientific research projects, obtained more than 60 authorized patents, published more than 120 academic papers including more than 50 papers indexed in WoSCC, and won several science and technology awards.</span></p>

Qiankun Zuo

<p><span style="color: gray;">Dr. Qiankun Zuo received the PhD degree from the China University of Petroleum, Beijing, China, in 2018. He joined the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences as a post-doctor. He is currently working as an assistant professor at the Hubei University of Economics, Wuhan. In the past few years, he has focused on applying generative adversarial networks to multimodal medical imaging computing for brain disease analysis. He combined anatomical knowledge and data-driven models to identify disease-related brain regions from magnetic resonance imaging. He achieved an end-to-end framework to compute disease-related regions from multimodal medical images. The abnormal changes in these brain region-related connections have the potential to be biomarkers for clinical diagnosis and further treatment.</span></p>

Artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative technologies are transforming ophthalmology by enabling faster, more accurate and personalized diagnosis and treatment of various eye diseases. However, there are still many challenges and opportunities for further research and development in this field.

This Methods Collection aims to showcase the latest advances and applications of AI and innovative technologies in ophthalmology, covering topics such as:

·      AI-based screening and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and other common eye diseases

·      AI-based prediction and prognosis of disease progression and outcomes

·      AI-based assistance and guidance for surgical and therapeutic interventions

·      Innovative technologies for teleophthalmology, remote patient monitoring and eye care delivery

·      Ethical, legal, and social implications of AI and innovative technologies in ophthalmology

The objective of this Methods Collection is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the current state-of-the-art and future directions of AI and innovative technologies in ophthalmology. It will also highlight the best practices, challenges, and limitations of these methods, as well as their potential impact on the research community and clinical practice. This collection will be valuable for researchers, clinicians, students, and policymakers involved or interested in applying AI and innovative technologies in ophthalmology.
