Dr Alastair Barr is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Physiology in the School of Life Sciences, University of Westminster, London. His research is focussed on structural and functional studies of human receptor-type tyrosine phosphatases and their role in signalling pathways in health and disease. Prior to joining the University of Westminster he was a Team Leader at the Structural Genomics Consortium, Oxford and during this time carried out a large-scale structural analysis of the human phosphatome that was published in Cell. Dr Barr received his BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow and a DPhil in Pharmacology from the University of Oxford. He carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania on G protein-coupled receptors (American Heart Association Fellowship), and at Duke University as an Assistant Research Professor working on chemoattractant receptor signalling in immune cells. He has also worked in the biotech and pharmaceutical sector.
