Bone Fracture Assessment

Bone fracture assessment is the systematic evaluation of a break in bone to determine its location, pattern, stability, and effect on surrounding function. In bioengineering and clinical practice, assessment combines patient history and physical examination with imaging, such as radiography, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging, which reveal structural changes and help characterize fracture geometry; repeated evaluations can also track healing. These measurements support decisions about treatment, fixation design, load distribution, and rehabilitation, while providing quantitative evidence for studying bone mechanics, implant performance, and computational models of injury and repair.

Micro-computed tomography (µCT) is a non-destructive imaging tool that is instrumental in assessing bone structure in preclinical studies, however there is a lack of consensus on µCT procedures for analyzing the bone healing callus. This study provides a step-by-step µCT protocol that allows the monitoring of fracture healing.

Development of a Novel Internal Fixation Model for Rat Radial Fractures: Fracture Healing Assessment and Dorsal Root Ganglion Isolation

Fractures: Bone Repair

2023

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age. Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...
