In Vitro Ocular Model

An in vitro ocular model is a laboratory system that recreates selected features of the eye using cultured cells, engineered tissues, or three-dimensional constructs, enabling controlled study of ocular biology without an intact organism. These models maintain relevant cell types and tissue interactions under defined conditions to reproduce processes such as barrier function, inflammation, toxicity, or drug transport. In bioengineering, researchers use them to investigate eye diseases, evaluate biomaterials and ophthalmic formulations, and screen potential therapies before animal or clinical studies. Advances in tissue engineering and organoid culture are expanding their ability to represent complex ocular structures and improve predictive testing.

Current in vitro models for evaluating contact lenses (CLs) and other eye-related applications are severely limited. The presented ocular platform simulates physiological tear flow, tear volume, air exposure and mechanical wear. This system is highly versatile and can be applied to various in vitro analyses with CLs.

A Method to Induce Ocular Surface Inflammation in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates a method to induce ocular surface inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction in a murine model. Stimulation of the mouse's immune system using an immunogen and later restimulation with the same immunogen promotes ocular surface inflammation, which causes plugging of meibomian gland secretion through neutrophil-produced aggNETs and leads to dry eye disease.

Glaucoma is one of the major causes of blindness in the world. Elevated intraocular pressure is a major risk factor. Laser photocoagulation induced ocular hypertension is one of the well established animal models. This video demonstrates how to induce ocular hypertension by Argon laser photocoagulation in rat.

2015

We have developed an eye irritation test which utilizes a three dimensional reconstructed human cornea-like epithelial (RhCE) tissue model. The test is able to discriminate between ocular irritant and corrosive materials (GHS Categories 1 and 2 combined) and those that do not require labeling (GHS No Category).
